Welcome to La Manga del Mar Menor
La Manga del Mar Menor (in Murcia, Spain) is a strip of land of de 24 km long and has been structured from Cabo de Palos towards north. It’s foundation was caused because of
the sand sedimentation of the dominating currents of the area. On the west side of the strip is Mar Menor, which is like a big lake of salty water, with a small opening. On the east you will find the Mediterránean sea. Both seas comunicate by two canals called "golas", in which the water flows between them.
During the XVI century, what we call today as Mar Menor was an open bay, and La Manga was a long border of small islets, very close to eachother; as time went by the land sedimentation acumulated between these islets until eventually La Manga del Mar Menor was formed.
These areas of land sedimentation was made up of dunes and vegetation of thickets with no change until the sixties, decade in which the place was then discovered for turism and big constructions started to slowly fill the landscape.
Now a days the place basically lives on turism that feeds it’s beaches during the whole year thanks to it’s warm climate, and it forms part of the Estación Náutica Mar Menor, which secures and offers the visitor sports activities, most specially sailing because of the Mar Menor’s excellent condition for this practise.
Administratively, it is divided between two localities of Cartagena and San Javier.

It’s special and natural ecological characteristic makes the Mar Menor a unique place and is the biggest saltly lake in Europe.
With semicircular form, it is separated from the Mediterranean sea by a strip of sand of 22 km long and between 100 y 1200 m wide, denominated La Manga del Mar Menor. The lagoon has been designated by the United Nations as a specially protected area for the Mediterranean.
It’s litoral perimetric counts of 73 km of coast where there are beaches of transparent and shallow water (the máxima depth is less than 7 meters), with a surface of 170 km².
On the south of this small sea rises the islets of the Perdiguera, Mayor, Redonda, Ciervo y Sujeto, which brings us reminiscence of it’s volcanic origin. Come and know La Manga, you will find accomodation in any of the hotels of the area (Cavanna, Doblemar, Galua, La Mirage, ...) or contact any of the innumerable property agencies who are willing to offer you a great variety of apartments to purchase or rent.
